Sister Eileen's Story

Sister Eileen Clare Goetzen died at 11:35 p.m. on July 26, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on March 8, 1923, in Chicago, to Richard and Adeline Keefe Goetzen, and was baptized Mary Jane.
Sister Eileen Clare entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1941, and professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1949. She earned a bachelor's degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Indiana University. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as an elementary and high school teacher for 40 years in schools in Indiana, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Illinois. Retiring from teaching, she gave 22 more years as clerical staff at Mother Theodore Guerin High School (now Guerin College Preparatory High School) in River Grove, Ill. In 2008 she returned to the Motherhouse and beginning in 2009, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer. The students and staff of Guerin High School had a special place in her prayer.
Sister Eileen Clare loved being with people. She ministered with generosity and enthusiasm. She also had a special love for animals, and in her later years, for the birds in the aviary at Providence Health Care. Her favorite place was near the aviary, watching the birds' antics. She had given names to each one and enjoyed sharing with anyone passing by the particular patterns this or that bird.
She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Adeline Carroll. The wake is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 31, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The mass of Christian burial is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
