Sister Bernadette's Story
Sister Bernadette Mary Carroll, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods died Sept. 22 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall. She was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Alhambra, Calif., to Charles and Margaret O'Brien Carroll and was baptized Julia May.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1939, and professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1947. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Indiana State University. Of her 78 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 28 years in schools in Indiana and California. She taught at St. Benedict School in Terre Haute from 1947 through 1953.
In 1968, she was elected to provincial leadership in California. Seven years later, she was elected to the General Council of the Congregation. Having completed a five year term, she returned to California and served as provincial secretary and treasurer until the province was dissolved in 1984. She then ministered for seven years as a member of the retreat staff at Marywood Center in Orange, Calif., followed by pastoral ministry at St. Teresa of Avila Parish in Los Angeles. Retiring in 2006, she continued to volunteer in parish ministry and tended to the care of her sister. In 2013, she moved to the Motherhouse, where she served in a variety of ways, active until her death.
Sister Bernadette Mary was a gracious woman with a loving concern and compassion for others. She had great trust in Providence, embracing the challenges of life as opportunities for growth.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Auld; and three brothers, Charles, John and Joseph who was her twin.
The wake is Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
