Sister Agnes's Story
Sister Agnes Mary Raetz died on Dec. 7, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on April 10, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, to Robert and Angela Swartz Raetz and was baptized Mary Agnes.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 12, 1963, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1970. In her 54 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 34 years as secretary and clerical assistant for the General Administration, the Business Office, the Records Office and the Mission Advancement Office of the Motherhouse. She gave two years of service as a clerical assistant to the President at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College from 1987 to 1989. Beginning in 2007, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Agnes Mary was efficient and meticulous in her work. Yet, amid the many details of her duties, she always met those who came to her door with a welcoming smile and a gentle, generous spirit. As her health declined, she continued to bring her calming presence to all with whom she had contact.
Sister is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Vangordon of Greenwood, and Angela Danford of Toledo, Ohio. She is preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Raetz.
The wake is on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The mass of Christian burial is on Friday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. The DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
