Ruby Jeanette (Russell) Riggs, 97, of Linton, passed away at 2 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. She was born at home on July 9, 1920, on the Sullivan- Greene County Line, the daughter of Arista and Lelia (Purcell) Turpen.
Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sullivan and the Royal Neighbors Lodge 4183 in Newberry. She graduated from Sullivan High School in 1938 and from Central Beauty College in Indianapolis in 1939. She married Otis Russell in 1938. Ruby enjoyed playing bingo in both Linton and Florida, where she enjoyed spending her winters.
Survivors include four daughters, Sandra McClung of Union City, Ga., Betty Kesler of Marshall, Ill., Joan (J.R.) Wilkerson and Jean Russell, both of Bloomington; one son, Otis (Beverly) Russell of Switz City; one sister, Betty Gajos of Monroe, Mich.; a stepson, Monte Riggs of Elkhart; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Otis Russell in 1986; her second husband, Jack Riggs in 1997; a son, Louie Russell; six sisters; and one brother.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2017, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home, in Linton, and 8 a.m. Saturday until the hour of the service. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton. Online condolences can be sent to the family at:
