Robert's Story

Robert Benjamin Walters passed away on June 2, 2017, in Cary, N.C., at the age of 93. He was born Feb. 4, 1924, at his grandparents' farm near Panhandle, Texas, the son of Leslie A. and Nellie (Jackson) Walters. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1941.
Bob was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served as a high speed radio operator in the 22nd Ground Observation Platoon, 596th Signal Air Warning Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war he attended Purdue University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1949. He spent his career as a chemical engineer and was a project manager with Commercial Solvents Corp. and International Minerals & Chemicals Corp.
On May 7, 1950, at Freedom Baptist Church, Waveland, he was united in marriage with his college sweetheart Harriet Ruth Hillabold. Together they established a loving home and raised three daughters. They lived for many years in Terre Haute, where they were members of First Baptist Church. After moving to Monroe, La., and Lakeland, Fla., they retired to Cary, N.C. Harriet preceded Bob in death Jan. 28, 2000. He married Mary Jo (Lochridge) Guy on Oct. 18, 2002, in Dallas. They lived in Artesia, N.M., and were blessed with almost 10 years of marriage before Mary Jo's death on Aug. 7, 2012. Since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Martha and her family in Cary, and attended Grace Community Church of Cary. Bob loved his Lord and his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his steadfast faith and devotion.
In addition to Harriet and Mary Jo, he was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his daughters, Gretta (Ken) Gramley of Westfield, Sue (Mark) Purschwitz of Georgetown, Ky., and Martha (Sam) Christie of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Dan (Kara) Purschwitz, Jim (Johnna) Purschwitz, Michael and Elizabeth Gramley, and Samuel and Stephen Christie; great-granddaughters, Hattie and Sophia Purschwitz. He is also survived by his stepsons, Joe Guy of Dallas and Eddie (Debbie) Guy of Artesia, NM; step-grandchildren, Dani (Chris) Kuykendall, Reggie (Staci) Guy and Graham (Kindra) Guy; stepgreat-grandchildren, Jackson, Mollie and Joleigh Guy, Gracen and Daegan Kuykendall. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (Donna) Walters of Hutchinson, Kans.; and his sister, Pat Wakefield of St. Peters, Mo.
A memorial service to remember and celebrate Bob's life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, Ind., with the Rev. Richard Kassel officiating. A graveside service will follow at Freedom Cemetery, in Waveland. The family requests that memorial donations in Bob's name be made to Grace Community Church of Cary, P.O.
