Robert L. Deal, 68, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 4:26 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born Aug. 2, 1949, in Terre Haute.
He retired as a sergeant from the Terre Haute Police Department after 27 years of service. He began his career with the Terre Haute Police Department as a patrolman and later served on the Tactical Unit as well as serving as sergeant of the Juvenile Division, both for many years. Prior to beginning his career with the THPD, he had been an officer with the ISU Police Department. After retirement he joined with the West Terre Haute Police Department, where he served as an officer for seven years before accepting a position with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department as a school protection officer at Fayette Elementary School in New Goshen from which he retired last year.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Rollings Deal, whom he married March 27, 1982, in West Terre Haute; two daughters, Kalee Deal (James McDowell) of Terre Haute and Lesli Marnewick (Eugene) of West Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Zachary, Paiton, and Mason McDowell, Evan Marnewick, and one on the way; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard "Lefty" Rollings and Vera Rollings of West Terre Haute; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Martha and Frank Haggard and Gary and Jacki Rollings; a lifelong friend, Jerry Arney; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eldora Deal; and a brother-in-law, Don Rollings.
Bob was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Navy. During his tours in Vietnam, he served his tour of duty on the USS Tutuila on the Saigon River. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574, the Masonic Lodge 42 Free & Accepted Masons, and Zorah Shrine Temple.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home with Chaplain Todd Haller of the THPD officiating. Burial will be in South Vigo/Black Cemetery with military and police honors provided by the THPD and the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and prior to services Tuesday. A celebration of life after the burial at West Vigo Middle School/High School cafeteria. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor's choice with envelopes available in the funeral home.
