Chief Master Sgt. Richard "Gus" Dawson Sipes, 87, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Harvey H. Sipes and Maude (Dawson) Sipes. Richard was born Dec. 5, 1930, in Shoals.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta (Gibson) Sipes; five children, Myrna (Jim) Lynch, Lisa (Ron) Holt, Rick (Lori) Sipes, Debra (Scott) Sipes-Fears and Brian (Shannon) Sipes; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard graduated from Shoals High School in 1948, and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. Richard served for five years and then joined the Indiana Air National Guard. He served his country proudly and was part of the 181st TAC Fighter GP, CAM division. He retired in 1988 after 37 years of service. After retirement from the service, he worked for Lockheed Martin and became a governmental consultant. Richard loved his family and enjoyed their time together. He was happiest when he was traveling, camping, vacationing with family, attending NASCAR races, tinkering in the garage, and hanging out with his cats.
A celebration of Richard's life will be Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of the service. He will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery with military honors presented by the VFW Post 972. Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., Terre Haute, was entrusted with arrangements.
