Pushpa Gopalan, 92, passed away Oct. 1, 2017, at home. Pushpa was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, and was the eldest of seven siblings.
She came to the U.S. with her two children and husband, Gopalan, in 1962, and attended Washington University in St. Louis. She then completed another master's degree and was ABD in Early Childhood Education at ISU in Terre Haute.
Pushpa loved children and was a passionate and devoted Montessori teacher. She served the community of Terre Haute, teaching at Head Start, St. Mary of the Woods, Washington Alternative School, and her own school, Millenium Montessori. She was one of the first Indian-American citizens in Terre Haute, and served as one of the first presidents of the Indian Association of Terre Haute.
She is survived by her daughter, Sujata; her grandson, Neil; brothers, Manu and Ramachandra; sisters, Purnima and Malti; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gopalan V. Gopalan; and her son, Himanshu.
There will be a celebration of life for Pushpa at the Ohio Building, 672 Ohio Street, Terre Haute, from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017.
