Paul's Story

Text size

BRAZIL - Paul Franklin Monds, 78, of Brazil, passed away unexpectedly, May 25, 2017, at his home. Paul was born Oct. 21, 1938, in St. Louis, the son of the late Olin Leroy and Edna Aurora (Glasemann) Monds.
He graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis in 1956, and then attended Washington University. Paul married the love of his life, Sandra Smith, on Feb. 21, 1959. He worked as a plant engineer at Bemis Company until his retirement in January of 2001.
Paul was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brazil, Strokers Car Club and the No Name Car Club.
Paul's primary concern was his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. People speak fondly of him saying: "He loved to share his knowledge and there wasn't anything Paul wouldn't do for you. He always made you feel special. There wasn't a better man that you can find. He was a true gentleman and man of integrity with exceptional character." Paul always had a smile, looked at the glass as overflowing, enjoyed laughing and fun. Basically, he believed and trusted in God and lived life to the fullest.
Paul was a renaissance man with many interests. He was a voracious reader, loved a good debate, boated for over 50 years and water skied until 75. It would not be uncommon to find him woodworking, metalworking, or helping his daughters with house projects. Paul has had a part in building multiple different homes for both of his daughters and his wife. It is safe to say that he will be remembered as a very talented man, "a jack of all trades".
For the past 25 years, on the first week of October, you would find Paul in Newport, officiating at The Antique Auto Hill Climb. During his younger years, he was active in the Nostalgia Drag Racing in St. Louis. In his free time, he enjoyed drawing and building replica cars from scratch including 1940's era Indy 500 cars. In fact, Paul was invited to run this car at The Race of Gentleman on June 10, 2017, in New Jersey.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Harry Painter and Olin Painter.
Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra Monds; daughter, Cynthia 'Cindi' Monds of Brazil, and Colleen Gard (Jay) of West Union, Ill.; grandchildren, Garrett Paul Gard and Ainslee Kay Gard (fiancé C.J. Martin) of West Union, Ill.; sister, Faith Thompson; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Brazil, with Pastor Garry Scroggins officiating. At the request of his family, cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 210 N Walnut St. Brazil, IN 47834. Contact online at:
