Norma Jean Diel, 79, of Brazil, passed away on May 2, 2017, at her residence in Brazil. She was born April 28, 1938, in Oblong, Ill., the daughter of the late Daniel Frank and Lana (Musgrave) Newbold.
She graduated from Oblong High School. Norma married John L. Woods and together they had two children, Mike and Debbie Woods. John preceded her in death in 1978. Norma then married Albert 'Abe' Diel on June 30, 1979. He preceded her in death on April 27, 2007.
She had worked at Fleetwood Homes in Brazil and Pillsbury in Terre Haute. Norma eventually retired from Pillsbury in New Albany. In addition to working, she also would be found helping on the farm, from feeding the chickens and hogs to corralling the cattle to helping with the crops. Norma enjoyed working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, sewing prom and wedding dresses, crocheting, collecting Pillsbury memorabilia and purple glassware, and traveling to Lakeland, Fla., during winters with Abe.
In addition to her parent and first husband, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Abe Diel; brother, Donald Newbold; sisters, Mary Crapo and Doris Smith; and grandson, Michael Jeremiah Woods.
Norma is survived by her children, Mike (Brenda) Woods of Brazil and Debbie (Mike) Barnett of Rockville; grandchildren, Jason (Misty) Woods, Justin (Kaycee) Barnett, Stacie (Brent) Jeffries, Stephanie (Mike) Snyder, and Heather Woods (Zeb Butts); great-grandchildren, Dylan Barnett, Jayden Woods, Jacelin Woods, Max Jeffries, and Hank Jeffries; brothers, Jesse Newbold and Butch (Pam) Newbold; as well as many stepchildren, extended family and friends.
Services will be Monday, May 8, 2017, at 10 a.m. at French Funeral Home with Pastor Ernie Rush officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. Service music will be provided by Mr. Stephen McCullough. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
