BRAZIL - Nola M. Goda, 90, of Brazil, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017, in her residence. She was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Terre Haute, to Herbert Harper and Irene "Deserie" Elkins Harper.
Nola was a 1945 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and attended My Lady Beauty Academy. She was a devout Catholic and attended Saint Augustine's Catholic Church in Fontanet, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Seelyville, and in her later years, Annunciation Catholic Church in Brazil. She was the owner of Country Charm Beauty Salon in Fontanet and later owned Mademoiselles Beauty Salon in Terre Haute. Nola also owned Honey Mountain Corporation in Fontanet. She worked at Meis Department Store in Plaza North Shopping Center and Steinmart, and in her spare time, helped her husband on the family farm. She retired from Green Leaf, Inc. in Fontanet.
Nola was the president of Vigo County Economics Club for many years and authored several cook books. She was an extraordinary cook, baker, confectioner and teacher of the art of cooking. She was an accomplished artist. She took pride in everything she was involved in, especially in creating a loving home for her family, and did everything to perfection. She loved her family immensely and always said that she would do it all over again if she could have the same members. She loved her poodle and companion of 16 years, Desiree Moonbeam. She had a green thumb and always took great pride in her roses and array of house plants. Nola loved music and played the violin, piano, and enjoyed dancing. She truly enjoyed watching and identifying all the different types of birds that she fed religiously, especially the blue birds. Nola was known to many of her friends and family as Mammer. Nola had a final message to her family, "Stay strong to the end and always love each other".
Nola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Michael Goda Jr. who passed away October 2003; two grandsons, Andy Goda and Patrick Goda; very special grandmother, Rose Wood (Granny Lu) of Terre Haute; stepmother, Daisy Harper; nephew, Michael Martin of Nevada; brother-in-law, Ray Neff of Nevada; and very special daughter-in-law, Donna Goda of Rosedale.
She is survived by her children, Dianna M. Goda Pursch of Lyman, S.C., Michael Goda and his wife, Linda, of Fontanet, Stephen P. Goda and his wife, Linda, of Rosedale, and David C. Goda and his wife, Tammy, of Bowling Green; her sister, Betty Neff of Las Vegas, Nev.; her 13 grandchildren, 39 great-children and one great-great-grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2578 N. Main St., Seelyville, with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Father John Hollowell will be officiating; entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Terre Haute. Samaritan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, assisted with arrangements.
