Mary's Story

Mary Ellen Schaffer, 86, of Franklin, Ind., formerly of West Terre Haute, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Kindred Hospital in Greenwood, Ind. Mary was born on May 11, 1930, in Terre Haute, to William and Hazel (Scott) Mullen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Schaffer. She is survived by a daughter, Carla Demaree (Doug) of Franklin; a son, Nick Virostko (Zelma) of Gore, Okla.; grandchildren, Jan Jones (Brett) of Franklin, Libby Findley (Chad) of Bargersville, and Nick Virostko, Penny Virostko and Dimo Virostko, all of Gore, Okla.; five great-grandchildren, Jake and Natalie Kate Findley, Cameron and Kellan Jones, and Hunter Virostko; and one sister, Nancy Piper of Illinois. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Alice Kyle, Betty Walters and Rebecca Jones; a daughter, Nancy Jane Schaffer; and a son, Donald L. Schaffer Jr..
She was a graduate of Valley High School in West Terre Haute. Mary was employed by the Social Security Administration, retiring after almost 30 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she worked for L.S. Ayres and Co., and later at Landtree Realty.
Cremation was chosen. A graveside service and burial of ashes will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Bethesda Cemetery, with Pastor Bob Roush officiating. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Services of Johnson County, 731 S. State St., Franklin, IN 46131. Care and arrangements were entrusted to Fitzpatrick Funeral Home.
