Mary Anne Gossett, 77, of Brazil, passed away Jan. 3, 2018, at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility, following complications from a fall this past week. She was born Dec. 2, 1940, the daughter of Roy Garrigus and Regina Tiffee Garrigus.
Mary Anne graduated from Brazil High School, and then continued her education at Indiana State Teachers College. She also obtained her master's degree in education from Indiana State University. Mary Anne was a devoted teacher, beginning at Logansport, Franklin Elementary School 1962-1964, Vigo County School Corporation at Rankin Elementary from 1964-1972, and then at Rio Grande Elementary from 1972-1998. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1977.
Mary Anne was not only a devoted educator, but she was always involved in community and civic organizations. Her memberships included the following, Phi Delta Kappa International, International Reading Association, Indiana State Reading Association, past-president of the Wabash Valley Reading Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, Omicron Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Chapter (charter member and past president),Tri Kappa, Alpha Omega Chapter, Brazil Associate Chapter, Tri Kappa (past president), Clay County Mental Health Association, board member (past secretary), The Board of Trustees of the Brazil Public Library and the Woman's Reading Club. She also was a life-long member of the Brazil First United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Secretary for over 50 years.
Mary Anne was united in marriage to Marvin W. Gossett on Jan. 27, 1968. In their almost 50 years of marriage they have enjoyed travel, and treasured time together with their friends and family.
Survivors include her husband Marvin Gossett of Brazil; stepsons, Tim Gossett and wife Carla of Avon and Tony Gossett and wife Sally of Rockville; grandchildren, Lucas Gossett (Stacy), Brian Gossett (Kelsey), Joe Gossett (Sierra), Anthony Gossett (Megan), Ben Gossett and Rosa Gossett; great-grandchildren, Abram, Addilyn, Nash, Jagger, Parker and Layton; one sister, Janice Mote of Portage; niece, Jennifer Good (Mike); great-nephews, Josh Good and Jonah Good; and a host of extended family and friends.
Services will be Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at 11 a.m. at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., Brazil, with the Rev. Rick Koch officiating. Music will be provided by Steve McCullough. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, from 4 until 7 p.m. and again one hour prior to services Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay County Humane Society, 8280 North County Road 125 W., Brazil. Pallbearers include Luke Gossett, Joe Gossett, Brian Gossett, Anthony Gossett, Josh Good and Jonah Good. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Stout, Dr. Charles French, Steve Brown and Dr. Tom Layman.
