Martha Helen (Jordan) Proffitt, 89, of Brazil, passed away Sept. 1, 2017, at Harrison Crossing in Terre Haute. Martha was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Troy, Ala., the daughter of the late Jesse Lee Jordan and Ione Newton (Killingsworth) Jordan.
Following high school, she attended a business college where she specialized her legal assistant skills in stenography. She married the love of her life, Max Arthur Proffitt, on Aug. 22, 1953. After the birth of her son, Martha transitioned in to life as a homemaker. She will be forever remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Martha is a member of Staunton First Christian Church and the Sunshine Club. In her younger years, she was an avid bowler. Later in life, she enjoyed reading, nature, being outdoors, Alabama Crimson Tide Football, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; brother; and three sisters.
Martha is survived by her son, Ed (Becky) Proffitt of Brazil; grandchildren, Shannon (Kevin) Lutes and their children, Evie and Jaiden; Mandi (Trent) Eldridge and their children, Maisie, Brooklyn, and Trey; Austin (Jamie) Proffitt and their children, Ethan and Jasmine; Talbott (Kayla) Fisher and their children, Jamison, Hayden, and Raeley; and Wesley Proffitt and girlfriend Tia Kirchner; as well as extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Staunton First Christian Church, 108 E Columbus St., Staunton, with Pastors Mark Miller and Doug Parkey officiating. Interment at Highland Lawn Cemetery will take place at a later date. At the request of the family, cremation will be entrusted with French Funeral Home.
