Marilyn's Story

Text size

Marilyn Sue Qualls, 72, of Schererville, and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017. She was born on Jan. 13, 1945, in Terre Haute, to Ralph Thomas Roberts Sr. and Edith Marie (Chance) Stott.
Marilyn was the oldest of three children. She helped take care of her two younger brothers, looking after them as if they were her own. She graduated from Garfield High School. Marilyn was fiercely independent and self-sufficient and was set on her path of working and attending Indiana Teacher's College. She became an elementary school teacher for Protsman Elementary in Dyer, Ind., and inspired children for 40 years. Marilyn not only had a passion for teaching, but also for lifelong learning. In her later years as a teacher, she went back to school and earned her master's degree in Education from Purdue-Calumet University. Teaching was her life, and she served on the board for her teacher's union. After retirement, she looked forward to catching up with the friends that she taught with over the years.
Marilyn was a member of Homewood Full Gospel Church in Homewood, Ill. She was active in the congregation and donated much of her time and resources. Marilyn will be remembered for her tenacious spirit and mother-like nurturing.
Marilyn is survived by a brother, Leland Lewis and wife Diana of Center Valley, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Qualls; parents; and a brother, Ralph Thomas Roberts Jr.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017, at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be 1 p.m. Monday, with Pastor Bob Roush officiating.
