Lester Swearingen, 86, of Brazil, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Brazil, on Jan. 19, 1931, to the late Ernest and Minnie Swearingen.
Lester graduated from Staunton High School in 1949, and served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Ipswich, England. He married Dolores (Dennis) Swearingen on Aug. 19, 1955.
Lester was a life-long member of Peniel Methodist Church, where he was actively involved until his death. He served several positions in the church over the years, including chairman of the board, Superintendent of Sunday school, Chairman of the Trustees, and was a Sunday School teacher from 1950 until last Sunday. Mr. Swearingen was the secretary and treasurer of the Town and Country Methodist Men, and a 50-year-member of the Masonic Lodge 541.
He worked for International Business Machines in Greencastle from 1953 to 1987. Lester enjoyed spending time with his family and the Hardees Breakfast Club.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lillian Thomas and Mary Ellen Honey; and by his brother. Chester Swearingen.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dolores Swearingen; son, Jay (Kelly) Swearingen; daughter, Jana (Darrell) Smith; grandchildren, Matt (Mary) Wright, Seth Wright, Bethany Wright, Abby Wright, and Austin Swearingen; and one great-granddaughter, Alison Wright.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, at Peniel Methodist Church, in Brazil, with Pastor Jeff Bridgewater officiating. Burial to follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to Clay County Food Pantry, envelopes will be available at the church.
