Joseph Bennett Adams, 91, born March 8, 1926, to Roy Earl and Clara (Bennett) Adams in Decatur, Ill., passed away peacefully at Signature Health Care on May 5, 2017.
Survivors include four sons, Joseph W. of Terre Haute, David R. (Marylou) of Harleysville, Pa., James A. (Annie) of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Raymond E. (Thelma) of Indianapolis; three daughters, Susy Blanchard (Ron) of Clinton, Alice of Terre Haute, and Celia of Terre Haute. In addition, he is survived by 25 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sister, Evelyn Hill; and special friend, Wanda O'Donnell.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rose (Lenges) Adams; parents; and one sister, Evelyn Slimp.
Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard several destroyers, one of which was sunk by a Japanese kamikaze plane. He earned a Purple Heart and several other medals during his service. It was during his two-and-half years at sea that he developed his lifelong love of water. He was very proud to know that one son, one grandson, and one granddaughter also joined the U.S. Navy, and another son served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Joe was a truck driver by trade, and a passionate boater. He spent many years as a member and Commodore of the Terre Haute Boat Club, and was always in demand for his mechanical skills in repairing boat and car engines, as well as his carpentry skills. He was a 33rd degree Mason in Evansville with the Reed Lodge.
It's been said that old salts never die, they just evaporate. Anchors aweigh, Dad, anchors aweigh.
Cremation was his choice, with a celebration of life to be scheduled at a later date. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at: www.roselawnfuneralhome.net
