John Pearson Tiefel, 88, of Clay City, passed away Sept. 13, 2017, at Cloverleaf Nursing Home in Brazil, with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Clay City, the son of the late Clarence and Cletus (Miller) Tiefel.
He graduated from Clay City High School in 1947. John married the love of his life, Joretta 'Nadine' Miller, on Sept. 19, 1952. He was a lifelong crop and livestock farmer. Together, he and Nadine and their children, would care for the pigs, cows, and daily rituals that it took to run a farm. John was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was very passionate about farming and providing for his family, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harlan Hummel.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nadine Tiefel; children, Jerry (Beverly) Tiefel of Zionsville, Randy (Connie Jo) Tiefel of Riley, Terry (Jina) Tiefel of Clay City, and Connie (Larry) Grant of Cory; 11 grandchildren, Heather Allen, Leslie (Nate) Nickels, Meghan (Dustin) Bankert, John Christopher Tiefel, Sarah (Adam) Krackenberger, Clayton Tiefel, Caleb Grant, Lydia Grant, Cassy (Donny) Gilley, Johnny (Sarah) Tiefel and Jake (Abby) Tiefel; nine great-grandchildren, Rebecca Allen, Emily Allen, Hannah Allen, Ava Bankert, Tyler Bankert, Chase Bankert, Lanie Bankert, Elizabeth Grace Krackenberger and Adelaide Nickels; and sister, Ann Hummel; as well as extended family and friends.
Services will be Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Harting officiating. Burial will follow at Sink Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home and Monday from 10 a.m. until time of the service at New Hope Baptist Church.
