John Edward Sedwick III, fondly known as Big John, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at Union Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born April 17, 1942, in Martinsville, Ind., to John Edward Sedwick Jr. and Edna (Steinmetz) Sedwick. He married Linda Green on July 9, 1961.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Sedwick of Terre Haute; children, John Edward Sedwick IV and Melissa of Plainfield, Jolee Newhouse and Troy Davison of West Terre Haute, Jamie Burger and Matt of Athens, Wis.; grandchildren, Christopher Burger, Avery Hart, Zachary Lyon, John Edward Sedwick V, Gabriel Newhouse, and Carmen Sedwick; great-grandchildren, Quenten Burger, Liam Hart, Madilynn Burger, and Lane Hart; a brother, Edwin Sedwick of Sellersburg; close family friend, Paula Harden; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John graduated from Martinsville High School. He attended college at the University of New Mexico. A Vietnam veteran, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. John worked for several years supervising juvenile offenders in Burlington, Iowa. He retired from JI Case, where he worked as a manager for ordering and scheduling. John was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972.
John was passionate about sports and was able to play or coach anything. Throughout his life, he encouraged kids by sharing his love of athletics and coaching in a variety of team sports including softball and basketball. He was an MSA softball coach, leading several National and All-Star Teams. John was instrumental in the building and development of the MSA Softball Park. John was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Rea Park Golf Club. Whenever he got the chance, he would be out on the course or practicing his swing.
John was a man of big stature and big heart. He made an impact on many during his time here on earth. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at the funeral home with the Rev.
