BRAZIL - John E. Schraedley Jr., 81, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at his home in Brazil. He was born in Dillsburg, Pa., on March 16, 1936, to the late John E. and Vera M. (Deckman) Schraedley.
John retired from the United States Air Force after more than 20 years of service to his country. He served in the Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Air Commandos, and spent 11 years overseas in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
After leaving the military, John spent 20 years employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Honor Guard, a member of the EOD Master Blasters, Knightsville Masonic Lodge, and the Brazil Eagles Aerie. John was a Scout Master for several years, enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Schraedley; and a sister, Marie Murray.
Survivors include a son, Dan (Darla Geldmeier) Hardesty; daughters, Cathy (Corey) Shields and Jennifer (Don) Hughes; brothers, Russell (Gladys) Schraedley, William E. (Phyllis) Eckert and Tom (June) Eckert; brother-in-law, Jack (Freda) Miller; sister, Barbara (Bob) Moyer; sister-in-law, Odena Harper; grandchildren, Corey (Nicole) Shields II, Jennifer (Nate) Wiram, Coby (Lindsey) Shields, Brad Hardesty, Chase (Joree Dolin) Shields, Audrey (Zack) Hughes, Max (Michelle) Hughes, Becca (Matt) Barclay, Tyler (Megan) Hewitt, Austin Geldmeier and Kayla (Patrick) Harlan; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil, with Bishop Ben Kulp officiating, and burial with military honors to follow at Calcutta Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, a Masonic Lodge service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at:
