John Wayne Pipes John Wayne Pipes, 71, of Clay City, passed away peacefully in the arms of his daughter Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in Union Hospital. He was born in Terre Haute on October 29, 1947, the son of Herschel Wayne Pipes and Norma (Gibbens) Pipes.
In 1966 he graduated from Clay City High School. In his young adult years, he hauled water for the rural community. John would get on the old tractor with a sickle bar and mow the county road sides. John enlisted in the Air National Guard #181st in 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1972. He became employed by Peabody Coal Mine where he was a voal analyst and land purchaser. John owned and ran the J & C Liquor Store and worked for AMC Nerco Coal Mine for 10 years and in 1989 he purchased the 3rd Generation Bar & Grill. He was a 50-year member and past master of Clay City Masonic Lodge #562 and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. John was the youngest past master ever recorded in the state. He was a 39-year sponsor of the Clay City Youth League. He enjoyed watching murder mysteries on television.
Survivors include his children, Missy Pipes-Collins and husband Jeff, John W. Pipes II and wife Karla, and Mindy Pipes and companion Jeremy Richard; his companion of 34 years, Kathleen Jackson; grandchildren, Zach Reagan (Courtney), Lindsay Reagan (Donald) Dylan Reagan (Ashley), Noah Lucas, Gianni Pipes, Shelby Pipes Miles Burkhart and Grace Burkhart; great-granddaughters, Harper, Hadlee and Avery; the mother of his children, Cheryl Grindle; Kathleen's children and grandchildren; and his special pet, Liam.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Herschel W. and Norma Pipes; and a grandson, Kodi Pipes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. 8th Street, Clay City, with Pastor David Smith officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Masonic services will follow the visitation. I'm so sorry for your loss. I cut John's hair several
week ago and had no idea of was ill. John was always
friendly and we shared many ideas.
