John Lee Fugate, 69, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 6:37 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. He retired as a railroad mechanic after many years of service beginning with Penn Central later with Conrail and lastly with CSX Railroad. He was born Aug. 10, 1948, in Terre Haute.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Frye Fugate; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Lori Fugate; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tom Reese; five grandchildren, John Michael Fugate(Paige), Tiffany Fields (Teddie), Travis Reese, Taylor Reese and Natalie Owens; four great-grandchildren, Trevor Fugate, Payton Fugate, Delanee Parsons and Cade Fields; Troy Harden, Jim Clark, Rob Elkins and Sheri Sears Gowens, all of whom John and Mary Lou considered as their children; a brother, Robert J. Fugate Sr. (Debbie); two stepbrothers, Mike Fisher (Karen) and Michael Lee (Tracey); several nieces and nephews including Mark Gomolisky; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel "Clarene" Fugate Fisher; his stepfather, Billy Fisher; and a brother, Jim Fugate.
John was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War during which time he served on the USS Mauray having served from 1966 to 1969. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574 in West Terre Haute. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, camping, dirt track racing, and bowling. He was a St. Louis Cardinal Fan. John loved all of his family and giving dirty looks to Mary Lou.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Wilbur officiating and military rites provided by the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. According to his wishes, cremation has been scheduled after services. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until service time Monday.
