John M. Davern I


DANA - John M. Davern I, 88, of Dana, Indiana, passed away at 12:18 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2019, at Paris Community Hospital in Paris, Illinois.
He retired in 1981 from Ethel Visqueen in Terre Haute with 26½ years of service and began farming.
He was born May 16, 1931, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to the late Frank Davern and Edith Davis Davern. His wife of 52 years, Martha Jane Russell Davern, whom he married September 17, 1964, preceded him in death August 21, 2017.
Survivors include one son, John (Angela) Davern II of Dana; one daughter, Jody Vansickle of Dana; and three grandchildren, April Colyer, Michael Davern and Dale Vansickle. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Davern; and two sisters, Martha Moeller and Mary Grace Garrett.
He was a 1948 graduate of Garfield High School and attended Indiana State University. He served with the U.S. Air Force overseas in Greenland and Iceland during the Korean War. He was very artistic, building scale models of homes and farmsteads with great detail. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 24, at Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home, 225 N. Maple Street, Dana, with Pastor Marc Loveland officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by Chrisman American Legion Post #477 will follow at Friends Chapel Cemetery in Scottland, Illinois. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared at:
