Janice Kay Hockman

Events

Janice (Jan) Kay Hockman, age 62, passed away peacefully in her home in Redwood Shores, Calif. At her side were her loving and devoted life companion of 27 years, Rebel Estes; and decades-faithful friend, Barb Hannan of Arizona.
Jan was born Oct. 24, 1955, in Terre Haute, Ind. She attended Warren and Woodrow Wilson, and graduated from North Vigo High School in 1974. She attended Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Ind., and then moved to Irving, Texas, staying with her sister, Judy and her husband Eligio Betancourt, to complete her higher education. She attended Texas Women's University and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of social work. Jan had a very artistic talent but never pursued it.
Eligio encouraged her to work in the airlines. After her social work career, she applied to American Airlines (AA) and was hired as a reservationist. While in Texas, she raised her niece, Chris Hockman Marone, through her teen years. Jan moved up the ranks over her 25+ years at AA to become a product manager at Sabre Inc., a division of American Airlines. Jan retired from EDS and returned to Terre Haute to manage the 60+-year-old family business, North Side Sporting Goods. Jan is a testament to hard work and determination; you can accomplish what you never thought was possible!
Jan and her life companion, Rebel, led an active, healthy lifestyle. They jogged, golfed and loved traveling, having visited most of the continents, even having flown the supersonic Concorde on one of its final commercial flights!
Jan led an exemplary life. She was kind, gentle, humble, honest and trustworthy. She continually showed her unconditional love for her family and friends. She was a lover of nature and animals, having rescued many abandoned dogs. Her last dog, Ellie, was Jan's constant companion, and still is for Rebel.
Sadly, Jan was diagnosed with cancer in mid-life. She fought the 12-year battle with fortitude and courage because she loved life and loved living it. Jan was deeply loved by her family and friends, and is dearly missed. We all miss her laughter, her smile and her want to help others. If we all lived our lives like Jan, the world would be a better place.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Julia Hockman; and grandparents, Frank and Juliana Koos. She is survived by her life companion, Rebel Estes; sister, Judy and husband Eligio Betancourt; brother, Michael Hockman; sister, Roberta Hockman; niece, Elissa Schafer; nephew, Christopher Betancourt; niece, Michelle Brentlinger; nephew, Scott Hockman; niece, Chris Marone; nephew, Richey Bell; niece, Denise Bell; and aunt, Elizabeth Harris; plus many more cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tribute contributions can be made to: the American Cancer Society and/or the Mission Hospice of San Mateo County, San Mateo, Calif. A celebration to Jan's life is scheduled for Friday, May 17.
