Genie's Story

Genie Duley Caplinger (formerly Mobley), of Harrisburg,, Va., passed away Oct. 2, 2017, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. She was a native of Terre Haute, the daughter of Jay and Eileen Duley.
Genie graduated from Wiley High School, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Early Childhood Education from Indiana State University. She served as director of the Margaret Avenue Childcare Center, Garfield Gardens Infant-Toddler Center, and as Indiana State Secretary of the Community Childcare Commission before teaching kindergarten-3rd grade for the Vigo County School Corporation. Later Genie worked for Head Start in Indianapolis.
Genie was married to David Mobley of Terre Haute from 1973-1997; the two were parents of one daughter, Katherine Elisabeth Mobley, whom she loved deeply. They were active members of Central Presbyterian Church for a number of years. Genie married Larry Caplinger, the love of her life, in 2000, and the two have resided in Harrisburg, Va., since 2003. Besides teaching, Genie had deep interest in animal welfare, gardening and the natural world, travel, and fashion. Genie loved America.
Genie is survived by her husband, Larry Caplinger of Harrisonburg; daughter, Katherine (Kate) Mobley and husband, Christophe Thompson of New York, N.Y.; stepson, Larry Caplinger II and wife, Katherine of Indianapolis; stepdaughter, Michelle Pate and husband, William of Indianapolis; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Shickles and husband, Ron of Indianapolis; brother, Randy Duley and wife, Bonnie of Pittsboro; sister, Beth Duley and partner, Bonnie Wilson of Terre Haute; niece, Sarah Cobb and family of Centerville; nephew, Chris Shickles and family of West Allis, Wis.; niece, Meganne Shickles of Indianapolis; nephew, Kyle Shickles and wife, of Indianapolis; nephew, Spencer Duley of Brownsburg; niece, Erin Stewart and husband of Streamwood, Ill.; niece, Heather Mobley Taylor and family of Satellite Beach, Fla.; Scott Mobley and family of Amherst, N.H.; Sam Mobley Jr. and family of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jeff Mobley and family of Golden, Colo.
A memorial service will be held at Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 4950 Wabash Ave., in Terre Haute on Oct. 21, 2017, at 2 p.m. A celebration of life will be held after the service at Charlie's Pub, 1608 Crawford St., in Terre Haute.
