Elizabeth's Story

Elizabeth Roth Thornton, 78, of Terre Haute, and formerly of West Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, surrounded by her family and lots of love. She was born in Terre Haute, on May 22, 1939, to Harry and Alberta Cramer Roth.
Elizabeth graduated from Concannon High School in 1957. She then attended Indiana State University and received her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in home economics education. She was a retired teacher from the Vigo County School Corporation. She taught home economics at West Vigo High School for 25 years and retired from Otter Creek Middle School after teaching there six years.
Liz is survived by her husband of 57 years, William (Bill) Thornton. Survivors also include her children, Jim and Lisa Thornton (Noblesville), Don and Cheryl Thornton (Terre Haute) and Julie and John Gloyeske (Greenwood); six grandchildren, Kara and Brandon Hall, Cory Thornton, Nathan and Lauren Thornton, Tyler Thornton, Jordan Gloyeske and Madison Gloyeske; one great-grandson, Lucas Thornton; and her sister, Jane Davison; and niece, Lisa Hettich Barnhart.
She was an active member of Bethany United Church of Christ, former Alpha Omicron PI sorority member, served on the Vigo County Credit Union Board, lifetime member of NEA, member of VCTA, ISTA, and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. She spent many years serving as sports business manager at West Vigo High School.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. S. Patel, Dr. Jabbour, Dr. Dultz, Dr. Gera, and Dr. Crawford for their many years of dedicated care. Also special thanks to Providence Medical Center, Cobblestone Rehabilitation, and the wonderful Intensive Care nurses at Union Hospital.
As per Liz's wishes, cremation has been scheduled. A memorial service will be at Bethany United Church of Christ, 201 West Miller Avenue, West Terre Haute on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. conducted by the Revs. Norris Keirn and Steve Moore. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Bethany United Church of Christ. Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory.
