Edith S. Nees, 95, of Terre Haute and formerly of Cory, Ind., passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Edith was born on Nov. 14, 1921, in Shelburn Ind., to Charles "Buck" Southwood and Edna Hawkins Southwood. She was a graduate of Farmersburg High School and had formerly worked for Commercial Solvents.
After marrying Harold on April 30, 1954, she became the consummate homemaker. She loved to cook and take care of her home and family. She was an avid gardener. She and Harold were known for their large vegetable gardens and her canning vegetables, and their sharing with family, friends and neighbors. Edith was known for her impeccable spotless house, lawn and car. All who knew Edith would say, "You never see any dirt or anything out of place in Edith's house."
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Harold Nees, who passed away on April 18, 2005. She was also preceded by one son, William Harold "Billie" Nees; and a daughter, Mary Louise Nees. After the death of her two children, Harold and Edith adopted her surviving son, Gary. She was preceded by a brother, Dennis Southwood and his wife Phyllis; and a sister, Thelma Southwood Sutton and her husband Raymond (Gus). She was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Irvin Nees and his wife Agnes, Ernest Nees and his wife Phyllis, and Verlin Nees. She was preceded in death by nephews, Edward Bouchard, Gerry Blaker, Richard Jeffers, Bob Aten, Ronnie Laswell, Alan Nees and his wife Linda, and Don Knox; as well as a great-nephew, Gerry Blaker II; and a great-niece, Heather Jeffers.
She is survived by her one son, Gary Nees of Terre Haute; and a sister-in-law, Jo Nees. She is also survived by nieces, Sandra Kay Sutton, Linda Bouchard, Sheila Jeffers, Sheila Aten, Darlene Blaker, Sonja Rebeck and her husband Marty, Phyllis Rose Green, Leona Kay Gaskins and husband Milton, Carolyn Knox and Janice Laswell. She is survived by one nephew, Dennis Edward Southwood and his wife Barb, as well as several great- and great-great- and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
Edith had requested prayers only in lieu of a funeral service. Prayers will be said at noon on Friday at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, Ind. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon on Friday at the funeral home. Bart Colwell will be officiating. Burial will be at Farmersburg West Lawn Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at:
