Dorothy Marian Owens Blade was born April 8, 1929, in Little Rock, Ark. She is the eldest daughter of the late, Elder J.A. Owens and Blanche Owens.
As a result of being raised and nurtured by devoted Christian parents, she was saved and baptized at the age of nine. The family migrated to Elkhart, Ind. There, at the age of 16, she graduated from Elkhart Senior High School, where she was the first African American to receive a scholarship. She continued her education at Indiana State Teacher's College in Terre Haute, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. She taught for two years in the Kansas City School system. She later became a social worker and casework supervisor for Vigo County Department of Public Welfare in Terre Haute, for 17 years. On Dec. 25, 1951, she wed the love of her life, Bishop Mark H. Blade.
She served as District Missionary, for 11 years, and was appointed the sixth supervisor of Indiana First Jurisdiction. She served in that role for 12 years, until her husband was appointed Bishop, Indiana First Jurisdiction.
Dorothy departed this life for her heavenly home on Dec, 23, 2017, at the age of 88, from the Meadows Manor North Nursing Home. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 66 years, Bishop Mark Henry Blade; five children, Mark (Annette) of Terre Haute, Michael (Pamela) of Indianapolis, Miles (Brenda) of Burlington, N.C., Linda (Timothy) of Evansville and Marvin (Jerrie) of Plainfield; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Evangeline (Jessie) Edwards, Gary Ind., and Lillian Sims of Gary; and many other friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Hubert, Titus and Timothy; sister, Cecelia; daughter-in-law, Vickie; and great-grandson, Sacha.
Visitation and tributes will be Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Saints Home Church of God in Christ, 2210 N. 13th Street, Terre Haute, from 4 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 801 Fort Harrison Road, Terre Haute. Viewing will be between 10 to 11 a.m. The eulogist will be Bishop Phillip Owens D.D. (cousin) from Las Vegas. Pastor, Mark J. Blade (son) will make the committal. Internment will be in Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Milton L. Hall Scholarship Fund or Saints Home Church of God in Christ sent to the address shown above. Russell Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
