Betty's Story

Betty Mae Adams, 82, passed away Feb. 21, 2017, at Exceptional Living Center in Brazil. She was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Vigo County, the daughter of Chester Barrows and Elsie (Crow) Barrows. She graduated from the Wiley High School class of 1953 and then furthered her education through the Indiana State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in Terre Haute and then at Staunton Elementary for 15 years. She and Denzil were married Aug. 26, 1956; they celebrated 60 years of marriage last August.
She was a member at Berea Christian Church, where she played the organ for several years and enjoyed teaching Sunday school. Bible Bowl, Bible quiz competition, was important to her, and she treasured her time working with youth in our community. While she was the leader of Bible Bowl they won the national championship. Betty also wrote questions for future national competitions. Betty was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Home Ec Club. She loved scrapbooking and completed 56 scrapbooks over the years.
Survivors include her husband, Denzil; son, Ed Adams; daughter, Connie Rodenbeck and husband Raymond; grandchildren, Matt Tanksley, Eric Tanksley (Kelli), Caleb Adams (Kim), Isaac Adams (April) and Hillary Adams Roper (Mitch); and great-grandchildren, Daisy Belle Tanksley, Teke Tanksley, Leo Tanksley and Miles Tanksley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Paul Barrows; and sister, Mary Rhoden.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Lawson-Miller Chapel, with Pastor Tom Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday. To leave a note of condolence, visit:
